Come as You Are

I think I'm going to have a party. You need to promise me you'll come, though - I have a genuine fear of planning a party for which no one shows up. So promise, ok? Pinky swear?

It's going to be a come as you are party.

No, not what you're wearing right now! If I opened the door in the oversized mens gym shorts and ratty nightshirt I'm wearing right now - sans bra and shoes, of course, though I DID take the time to gather all of my hair into a flattering Pebbles Flintstone/Gene Simmons top of the head ponytail - you'd run screaming for the hills. No - I want you to come as you ARE. Come as who you feel like on the inside. (and hey - if who you are on the inside is a Flintstone/Simmons hybrid with baggy clothes and saggy boobs - I won't judge. Come on in. Make yourself at home. Drugs to the right, hookers to the left.)

Wouldn't that be a great party? Better than Halloween. People showing their true colors. Speaking of colors - my inner gypsy, of course, would be wearing lots of them. And scarves...so many scarves... I would still probably have bare feet - but there would be jingly ankle bracelets and toe rings... And I would open the doors of my house - just as it is, with no apologies - to cowboys and rock stars and princesses and captains of industry - to super moms and pirates and pin-up girls. We would mix and mingle and the people we meet would see US - not some time-worn, society-driven version of us - the REAL us.

Are you packing your bag and planning your wardrobe? You promised you'd come. You pinky swore.

A friend told me recently that in her dreams she is always thin. She asked if anyone else experienced the same thing. I quickly replied that I am always thin, I always have amazing hair, and I'm usually wearing white. I don't know what that's all about - since my inner self, as I've already mentioned, is a huge fan of color. But my dream self wears white. And she moves like water; like wind... She's awesome.

She's not coming to the party, though. Because even though she's me in my dreams, she's not me on the inside. Plus, she doesn't seem like the sort who could get her party on.

So, I need to know: What are you wearing to my party? What will I see when I see the real you?

Would it break your heart to learn I wear the inner me on the outside all the time? Oh, good. Turtleneck, sweater, fleece vest, jacket, jeans, color-coordinated cotton socks, and hiking boots. Oh, unless it's July, then it's going to be shorts, tank top, Birks, and a sweatshirt and jeans just in case it gets chilly.

Lady Tammy, I would be honored to come to your party, if it coordinates with my schedule. Sadly, my regular monthly trips to Columbus are now coming to a close.

I'd be pretty much as I am, a cross between Captain Jack, Robin Hood, Robin Williams and Keith Richards without the wrinkles. I guess that makes me Sir Hook of Warrick!

Just regular old me....jeans and tee shirt. I'm no different on the inside, I don't think.

I will come! In my jeans. I'd come braless if I didn't want to freak out the world, but that's my favorite way to hang out (at home - where no one can see me).

Wow, you ask great questions. You and I would make a great pair, because I'd come in a flowing, multicolored caftan, with a few bangles and long dangly earrings. A little bit hippie, a little bit gypsy, a little bit elegant person with huge walk-in closet (remember, this is imaginary). I think my true self does have a lot of facets. Hmm. I think you've sparked a blog idea. Thanks!

I'm packing my bags!!! I've decided that the "real me" appearance wise is half skater chic/half prepster...that's me!!

Well, I have to admit the inner me is a lot like the outer me, except without the bad back so the inner me would actually work out and not have this extra weight.

I would probably wear either baggy jeans, comfy sweat pants, or a comfy cotton skirt. A t-shirt with some witty slogan would do the trick, but no shoes, absolutely no shoes for me.

Jewelry would be a minimum, pretty much the same as I wear now. A couple rings maybe, a bracelet and a watch, and my necklace. No earrings, they bother me.

Oh and I would be the one carrying the camera!

Hmmm, I think my inside is more vivacious than my outside. I honestly have no sense of style when it comese to clothes. So I'd be wearing shorts or jeans and a simple shirt with sandals or sneakers. But I'll be the one smiling, making conversation with strangers and doing my best to make someone laugh and feel comfortable. I may say some some strange or outrageous things or I may try to get the other party folks to get up and do the "Footloose" line dance with me. That's me at a party and me in real life for most of the time. If I'm at a party, I'm usually outgoing but if I'm at home, I might be quiet and just want alone time. But I'd definitely be talkative and excited to see YOU Tammy! :-)

I'd love to come. But my inner self and outer self are pretty much the same. Kind of boring, suburban mom look. But I'm also friendly and outgoing. I definitely won't be dancing on any tables or wearing a lampshade on my head, but I will try to mingle and get to know everyone.

I'd wear what I'd wear pretty much everyday if I had the choice: a t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers. Comfort at it's barest essentials.

Have you seen that painting The Scream?? That's what I look like on the inside most days.

Funny about the dreams, I seldom remember my dreams and the ones I do remember I don't think I ever notice what I look like or am wearing.

I'll probably be wearing boot cut jeans, no embellishments except maybe a little fancy back pocket...no sequins or stitching or anything like that. I'll have either a slightly oversized denim jacket or shirt over colorful but simple shirt, scoop neck. If it's the shirt, it will have snaps, not buttons. Probably clogs or sandals...flat, of course. Hair will be a little below shoulder-length maybe a little wavy and full (oh to have full hair) but soft and casual. Sunglasses and large hoop earrings maybe a ring or two. and a big leather slouchy bag. Sounds like I'm caught in the late 60's/early 70's 'cause in my heart I am.

It is almost scary to ponder this. I still have no idea who the "real me" is. I love gypsy skirts, too - although I never wear them much - and you can bet I'll have that nose piercing I've been pondering...if I can work in a good hair makeover in before the party, that would be good; but it would also defeat the purpose since we are supposed to be come as you are I guess...

I will be wearing short, but tasteful shorts that show off my 33" inseam. My calves will look similar to how they are now, but my thighs will be like they were in early high school when it never occurred to me to show off my 33" inseam. My stomach would be covered, but flat.

Fortunately, my personality, smile, sense of humor and many other things would be the same as they are now. But my legs! No one would notice my personality because of those legs.

So when are you having this party?

FIRST. I love Nirvana. Nice title

Second. I ALWAYS worry when I throw a party no one is going to come. Lol, Always!

and last. Jeans and flip flops.

A party I'll be there! I'll be the one with the half-ponytail, comfy tee, jammy/sweats and Mary Jane slippers. Oh, and if I'll stop by the Dairy Queen on my way.

the truth is you'd probably see nothing. I tend to blend into the background.

I do make a mean spinach salad though...did you say potluck?

First off, your dream self sounds worthy of a Heart video. Just saying. I have no idea what I look like in my dreams. I am going to have to pay more attention.

Now to the party. You had me at party and come. I pinky swear. Now if you really want me to come as I am... I would be barefoot with chipped 3-week old toe nail polish. I would have on shorts that while comfortable may not be the most attractive choice, a tank top, no make up and hair that could use both highlights and a shampoo. But I would be ready to rock!

So when's this party?

I know exactly what I would wear...

I would be wearing short cut-off jean shorts (well, short but not trashy) that accentuate my long, lean, muscular tan legs (the sort that hikers have), with my broken in Birkenstocks that have been to Key West and back, with a comfy t-shirt, maybe a Buffett t-shirt or Bob Marley or something like that. I would have beads around my neck and silver rings on my hands. I would be wearing my hair long and curly, but a good curly, not a frizzy curly like it usually wants to do. Definitely some highlights, but from the sun, not a bottle. Maybe I would even have a tattoo even though I sort of hate ink on my skin and I am terrified to get one. I would also come toting a 6-pack, because really, you should never come to a party empty handed.

What time should I be there?

P.S. Can you tell I went to OU in the early 90s? Hahahahahaha!!!

I'm ALWAYS thin in my dreams. And for some odd reason, flexible. What's with that? I always border on the gymnastic type of flexible even though I have never once aspired to be anything remotely resembling a gymnast. Go figure. My dream self is kind of messed up.
I too will be wearing lots of colors to your party. There will be lots of them and they will be bright. They may or may not all match. But chances are good, I won't care.
Your party sounds kick ass.
